Today marks a historic moment in our fight against Big Tobacco. The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to support The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which will allow the FDA to exert control over the production and marketing of tobacco products.
This new legislation will have significant effects on the way Big Tobacco can advertise their products. According to the New York Times1, the Bill will force Tobacco companies to:
- Replace full color in-store displays with black and white advertising
- Remove all outdoor advertising of tobacco products within 1,000 feet of schools and playgrounds
- Stop using phrases such as “light” and “low tar” in their advertising by next year
- Add large, graphic health warnings to tobacco product packaging by 2012
With President Obama expected to sign The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act very soon, we believe it is time to begin preparing to contact the FDA regarding their new role in regulating Big Tobacco.
